Join us at Shelf Life Books for the launch of Alice Major’s upcoming book of poetry, Welcome to the Anthropocene. Published with U of A Press, Welcome to the Anthropocene is part of the Robert Kroetsch series.
Alice Major observes the comedy and the tragedy of this human-dominated moment on Earth. Major’s most persistent question—“Where do we fit in the universe?”—is made more urgent by the ecological calamity of human-driven climate change. Her poetry leads us to question human hierarchies, loyalties, and consciousness, while also challenging us to find some humility in our overblown sense of our cosmic significance.
Alice Major, Edmonton’s first poet laureate, has published 11 books of poetry and essays, many of which explore her long-standing interest in the sciences. She is the recipient of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta 2017 Distinguished Artist Award.
Alice Major will be joined for her launch by Weyman Chan. Weyman Chan’s most recent book of poetry, Human Tissue, was published with Talon Books in 2016. He won the 2003 Alberta Book Award for his first book of poetry, Before a Blue Sky Moon. His second book, Noise from the Laundry, was a finalist for the 2008 Governor General’s Award for Poetry.
